How Kitchen Design Has Evolved Over the Last Century
As much as the interior of the house has changed, the kitchen has evolved too. Kitchen these days are very convenient, and most of the word is done by the machines but not very long ago, everything was done by the women in the kitchen. Over the time the technology and machines have taken the place of the human work and everything is done simply.
Before going through the details of how kitchen designs used to be, we must understand the influence of human work in the kitchen and the limitation of the technology during that era. Most of the kitchen was evolved from very basic to very advanced during the 100 years. More appliances were made to make lives easier and fast as well as to save time and energy of the people.
Kitchen in 1900-1910’s:
In the introduction of the 19th century the kitchens were not very modern and a private place to cook food and keep all the personal food-related activities. Majorly it is a place to cook food and activities related to it. The fridge was introduced in this era and preserving the food became easy. The people were finding methods to make their cooking easier. The gas stove was famous kitchen equipment, and mainly all the cooking was done on it.
Kitchen in 1920’s:
The fridge and gas stoves are more famous these days, and majorly all the kitchens have this equipment. The kitchen got more focus from the household like other parts of the home. The decoration has started in the kitchen too such as rugs on the floor and cabinets too. Most of the equipment in the kitchen were designed as freestanding. The decorations are added, and the kitchen was introduced with more capacity.
Kitchen in 1930’s:
During the era of The Great Depression, the kitchens got colorful and decorative. The more decorations are added to the kitchen such as floral wallpaper, curtains, rugs, wooden floor, and cabinets. More colors and designs are introduced in the kitchen, and it was introduced as a family space by adding dining tables in many kitchens around the world. The fridge is also introduced with the in-store storage. Also, the Top monitor fridge is introduced during this era. The top monitor fridges resemble the Civil War Ships, and people pay more concern to the machines in the kitchen.
Kitchen in 1940’s:
The kitchens are more decorative in this era; the crockery got more attention which includes the china crockery. The crockery includes the paints and designs, as well as the cabinets, got displayed by the crockery as well. The plants are also including in the design of the kitchens during this era. Kitchens are designed for two tones and paints. Usually, the cabinets are wooden tone, and the paints are of white tones. The ready-made cabinets are a very new trend in the kitchen, and people buy and install ready-made cabinets for the kitchen. The first wall over was introduced during this time which leads to the base of the modern kitchen.
Kitchen in 1950’s:
The Kitchen during this time become more social and comes to the front end of the house, the open kitchens become more popular, and people make it a place to socialize at home similar to the drawing room. This is the time of floral prints and colored appliances to add more style to your kitchen, mint green, pink and blue appliances are introduced. The technology was also added to the old kitchen appliances such as ice making compartment was introduced in the fridge which later becomes the freezer. There are many other appliances was introduced to help the kitchen work such as toaster, hand mixers, and coffee maker, etc.
Kitchen in 1960’s:
During this time many women joined the workforce and due to this most of the women were looking for more convenient appliances for the kitchen to save time and energy. New and advanced appliances become popular and common. The dishwasher and garbage disposals are the must-have kitchen appliances. The orange and mustard were very in for the kitchen cabinets as well as golden color appliances were a new trend in the kitchen during this time.
Kitchen in 1970’s:
The microwaves are the latest appliance which got popular during this time; it sold more than the gas stoves. The microwaves made the cooking easier and convenient as well. The introduction of Kitchen Island was the new trend of the kitchen design.
Kitchen in 1980’s:
The kitchen designs got more space than before as well as professional interior designs and touch. The oak cabinets, as well as flooring, were widely used in kitchens to make more good, expensive, durable and comfortable to use. The cookbooks got more famous and published on many cuisines, the shelves were made to display the cookbooks as well.
Kitchen in 1990-2000:
During the last decade of the century, the kitchens got more spacious as well as significant. The kitchen becomes the place for cooking, gathering, and entertainment as well. The kitchen was more open, and plants were also introduced in the design of the kitchen, the stainless steel is the most commonly used material to make the crockery and appliances. At the end of the century, there were hundreds of brands making kitchen appliances such as bread maker, blenders, mixers, toasters, food processors, hand blenders as well as major kitchen appliances includes microwaves, ovens, and fridge, etc.
